TAFE; FINAL PORTFOLIO

So it's finally the end of the course and here is a screen shot of my final 10 images to present tonight at school

The parker furniture was shot inside a studio using exiting furniture that I styled in the space available. The painting was done by my friends grandmother and sat well within the set.

The truck combines with the shots of the farrier for some form of continuity and the rest speak for themselves.

I chose to do some people shots as it is not something I do a lot of at work. I have learned a lot in thr process of capturing people and will continue to refine my technique. I thought it was good to have variety in my portfolio so that clients can see diversity in my ability which will lead to all types of jobs..

In the future I would like to focus more on commercial/ advertisement/ product. However for the purposes of the course I tried a little of everything :)

Thanks

TAFE; DIGITAL ENLARGEMENT

One week we used one of our existing images and converted them into a Black and White image on photoshop. from there we were sent to use a digital enlarger to expose our image to paper that would be processed with chemicals in the darkroom.

I did not have a very contrasting image to begin with so the results were less successful however I did try processing chemically and also with a normal inkjet printer which resulted in 2 very different results...

TOP IMAGE WAS CHEMICALLY PROCESSED

BOTTOM IMAGE WAS AN INKJET PRINT

TAFE; CREATIVE PHOTOSHOP EXERCISES

During the year we were also taught some simple photoshop techniques to help us enhance our images.

Some of the examples can be seen here below (PLEASE NOTE; NONE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHY IS MINE)

The exercises include using blending tools and masking objects.

TAFE; PRINT- WOOD TRANSFER

For my last assignment I decided to make an inkjet print and transfer it to a block of timber. This is a very simple but fun process that involves only a few items..

Cost

timber chopping board $17
Mod Podge $20
sandpaper $0.80
brushes $5
sealant $15

All you need to do is make a print to normal (not photographic) paper (if there is text you  must remember to mirror the image so that it transfers the right way and not laterally reversed)

Once you have the print I quickly sandpapered down the chopping board (I chose to do this as the chopping board appeared to be treated and I wanted to remove some of this to improve my transfer)

Once prepped it was just a matter of brushing down the chopping board and print with Mod podge glue and carefully placing down the print Ink side down onto the board.

Smooth out bubbles and leave to dry for the day (if in a hurry use a blow dryer)

dampen lightly with a cloth and using fingers, rub away the paper.

Seal with whichever material you choose ...

TAFE; FARRIER JUD

Last week I had the opportunity to meet my horses Farrier Jud, a big broad and well defined operatic singer and hard working farrier.

I shot just detail shots to focus on his hands and the tools used for the job.

TAFE; Project Millie

Final choice of Images- prefer Image on right

Lighting reference

COST OF PROJECT

Lens cap to destroy - $15
Tape - already owned
Pin- already owned

TIME OF PROJECT

few minutes to make pinhole by drilling a small hole into the centre of my lens cap, tape over the hole with camera tape and prick with needle

spent hour testing to see if worked and readjust holes if they were jagged

half hour down by water to shoot ocean/ ocean pool

COMMENTS

Obviously it is not a very sharp image even by 'pinhole' standards but in saying that I am satisfied with the level of "sharpness" or softness should I say. There is enough focus to understand the context without having to have everything in detail

If I had to do it again perhaps I would buy a ready made pinhole cap but it was a pleasure to make one of my own

TAFE; DREAM LIKE INSPIRATION

PHOTOGRAPHERS UNKNOWN

My latest mood at the moment is in this dream like atmosphere as per the images above shot by people who I have no idea who they are... some of these are tonal references of which I would like to capture myself and some also encompass the natural landscape which also plays a large role for my current project. Details to be revealed soon ...

TAFE; INSPIRATION CONTINUED

PHOTOGRAPHED BY MYSELF

Here are my final results from an earlier post..Due to a change in costume reference and also a more contrasting background it was a completely different outlook to my original idea and reference shot..  It was something I had never tried before and although it is not perfect it was certainly a real learning curve..

cost of shoot: $0

printing: $40

time spent: half day shooting.. and a long time retouching !!

TAFE; RESULT

This here is my final result..

Cost Involved

$0

Time spent

 2 days shooting
(one for model and 2nd for flowers)

Time spent on photoshop..

secret

TAFE; EXPERIMENTATION

These are my original 3 images that I photographed.. and combining all three using photoshop I was able to create the surrealism effect I was after.

It basically consisted of using the opacity capability to blend the images to my hearts content before making a selection of the flowers below and copying it onto a layer and also blending it into the shot. In order to make the flowers fit where I wanted to I expanded them and rotated around using the free transform tool

TAFE; INSPIRATION

Moving on from my original idea of looking at pictorialism in photography, I decided to merge my ideas of having a softly focused portrait and combining it with 2 more images to create one image.

and by looking at these examples I was able to find the right material to create something of my own using photographs that I took recently...

TAFE; INSPIRATION

My latest Ballet idea took me to testing some lighting set ups for my next shoot. This is the lighting Ive decided to go for however the background colour is a complete NO NO !!

This is me attempting to be a Ballerina !!! And Below is the photo that inspired me. As you can see my photo is nothing like that.. but with a change of colour scheme (this red was the biggest roll I could find at the time of this test shoot !!) I should have something a little similar.. but not too similar that I can't call it my own..

TAFE; INSPIRATION

I love plants and shooting them in an abstract way.. this is my most recent Agave..

These 2 wall papers are great inspirations for me, although I have not chosen to go for such depth of shapes and colours, I love the flow and movement in both of them...

TAFE; POP ART

In the 1960s young artists in the United States and England made popular culture their subject matter by appropriating images and objects such as common household items, advertisements from consumer products, celebrity icons, fast food, cartoons, and mass-media imagery from television, magazines, and newspapers. These artists also often used forms of mechanical reproduction that downplayed the idea of originality or the individual mark of the artist. The Pop Art style sought to test the boundaries between art and life.

And due to its utilization of found objects and images it is similar to Dada.

TAFE; SURREALISM

Surrealism was an art movement during Modernism which was considering a process of creating without thought in order to make something that combined dream like concepts with real elements that would not normally be accociated with one another

Man Ray and Maurice Tabard worked within this movement and used processes such as mutliple exposures, combination printing and solaristion to create photographs that linked the dreamworld and real world together.

I found I already had a similar image that may fit this description, however it was made in post production and I have no yet experimented with any in-camera techniques
